Sigourney Weaver hinted at a possible return to the Alien universe during a recent reunion panel at New York Comic Con.
The panel, celebrating the long-running franchise, brought together Weaver and her 1979 co-star Veronica Cartwright.
Weaver shared that producer Walter Hill had written 50 pages exploring where Ellen Ripley would be now. She called the pages “quite extraordinary” and said they reflect a society that sidelines someone who tried to help humanity.
“I’ve never felt the need [to reprise the role],” Weaver said. “I was always like, ‘Let her rest, let her recover.’ What Walter has written seems so true to me… I think it’s a very strong first 50 pages. I’m thinking about working with Walter to see what the rest of the story would be.” She also confirmed that she had a meeting with Fox or Disney about the potential project.
Cartwright joined Weaver on stage and reflected on the early days of Alien. She recalled how studio executives initially underestimated the film and how audiences reacted to the chestburster scene in theaters.
“They didn’t give [the cast] a premiere,” Cartwright said. “I went down to the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood and saw it by myself… Nobody had seen anything like it. It was really super impressive.”
The Alien franchise has remained active in recent years. Alien Romulus came out in 2024, and Hulu’s Alien: Earth series, created by Noah Hawley, wrapped up its first season last month. Meanwhile, Weaver is busy with another sci-fi adventure, appearing in next summer’s Star Wars project, The Mandalorian and Grogu.
It’s exciting to hear that Ripley’s story might continue. Weaver’s involvement and Walter Hill’s new pages suggest a thoughtful approach that honors the original character while exploring new territory. Fans of the franchise have a lot to look forward to.
