After the release of the first film, producer Todd Garner, writer Greg Russo, and director McQuoid started planning the future of the franchise. This included talks about spin-offs focusing on Johnny Cage and Bi-Han / Sub-Zero, as well as a direct sequel. By 2022, the studio officially green-lit Mortal Kombat II with Slater writing the script and McQuoid returning as director.

Filming took place in Australia, starting in June 2023. Production was briefly paused in mid-July due to the SAG-AFTRA strike but resumed in November and finished in late January 2024.

The story follows the champions of Earthrealm as they join forces with Johnny Cage to fight against Shao Kahn, whose rise threatens their world and the survival of its defenders.

Mortal Kombat II looks set to deliver bigger battles, more intense action, and fan-favorite characters returning to the screen. With a third film already in development, the franchise shows no signs of slowing down.
