Disney’s Lion King franchise may be getting another new movie, according to industry insider Daniel Richtman.

The iconic series began with the original 1994 animated feature directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff. Since then, the franchise has expanded massively, including direct-to-video sequels and prequels, a 2019 photorealistic remake, spin-off TV shows, educational shorts, video games, merchandise, and even a Broadway musical that has run for years and won six Tony Awards.

Overall, the Lion King franchise is one of Disney’s most successful, with total earnings exceeding $11.6 billion as of 2019.

The story of the franchise follows the lions of the Pride Lands, led by Simba as king, and has been inspired in part by the works of William Shakespeare. Its combination of compelling storytelling, memorable characters, and powerful music has made it a beloved series across generations.

The latest film in the franchise, Mufasa: The Lion King, premiered on December 9, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and was released in the U.S. on December 20. It received mixed reviews from critics but still grossed $723 million, ranking as the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2024.

The Lion King series has always managed to balance nostalgia with new storytelling, and a new installment could bring fresh adventures while honoring the legacy of the original. What do you think about another Lion King movie? Share your thoughts in the comments.
