Amy Poehler poked fun at the rise of AI in Hollywood during her opening monologue on Saturday Night Live, which also celebrated the show’s 50th anniversary.

Poehler, who currently hosts the Good Hang podcast, reflected on how much the world has changed since the first SNL episode aired on October 11, 1975.

She joked about the differences between then and now, including how women couldn’t even have credit cards in 1975. “Yeah, but now I’m kind of like, ‘Somebody take my credit card away,’ am I right?” she quipped to the audience.

Poehler also took aim at Tilly Norwood, the AI-generated actress who has been making waves in Hollywood. She recalled watching SNL as a teenager in Massachusetts and imagining herself as an actress, “at least until they invent an AI actress who’s funnier and willing to do full frontal.”

Later in the monologue, Poehler emphasized the importance of laughter during difficult times, while continuing her humorous dig at AI performers.

“Before we start the show, I just wanted to say one thing: I know it can feel like times are very tough right now…And to that little AI robot watching TV right now who wants to be on this stage someday, I say to you, ‘Beep boop beep boop.’ Which translates to, ‘You’ll never be able to write a joke, you stupid robot.’”

She capped her jokes by clarifying that she herself is open to more daring performances, but no one has asked her to take things that far. “And I am willing to do front full frontal, but nobody’s asked me, okay!”

Poehler’s playful criticism highlights the growing conversation around AI and its role in entertainment, while also celebrating SNL’s long history. It’s a mix of nostalgia, humor, and commentary on modern technology that resonated with fans.

It’s interesting to see traditional performers like Poehler address AI in such a humorous but pointed way. It shows that while technology is advancing, human creativity and timing still have a unique edge. What do you think about AI actors entering Hollywood? Share your thoughts in the comments.
