Former West Ham boss Graham Potter open to vacant Sweden job

Former West Ham, Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter has expressed an interest in becoming the Sweden national team head coach, admitting it “would be a fantastic opportunity”.

Jon Dahl Tomasson was relieved of his duties as Sweden boss on Tuesday following the team’s poor start to their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Scandinavian nation are currently bottom of Group B having picked up just one point from four games.

Potter, who prior to landing jobs in the English top-flight and Championship spent seven years managing Swedish side Ostersunds, was sacked by West Ham last month after only eight months in charge.

Potter guided Ostersunds to three promotions and a Svenska Cupen triumph, as well as leading the club to the 2017/18 Europa League knockout stage.

And the 50-year-old appeared to be open to the idea of returning the the country where he enjoyed great success.

Speaking to Swedish media outlet Fotbollskanalen, Potter said: “I’m actually in Sweden right now, in my house in Sweden.

“I’m between jobs and just left the Premier League.

“I’m open to anything, really, where I feel I can help. The job as head coach of the Swedish national team is fantastic.

“I have feelings for Sweden. I love the country and I love Swedish football. I have a lot to be grateful for towards Swedish football.

“So yes, it would be a fantastic opportunity for me, obviously.”

With two World Cup qualifying group games remaining, Sweden are on the brink of elimination.

Despite boasting the likes of Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres in their ranks, they are six points behind Kosovo in second and so, barring a remarkable set of results, will not be appearing at next summer’s showpiece event.
