Paramount+ has released a new trailer for its upcoming series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy during New York Comic Con on Saturday.

The show, the franchise’s first live-action drama focused on Starfleet cadets in their early twenties, is set to premiere on January 15.

The latest trailer leans into more drama compared to the first teaser, which received mixed reactions online, with one commenter calling it “TikTok Space P***.” This new look includes cadet romance and a very angry Paul Giamatti, who plays a recurring alien villain.

The series stars Holly Hunter as the Academy’s chancellor and features Robert Picardo returning as The Doctor. Tatiana Maslany, known for Orphan Black, will appear as a recurring guest star in the first season.

The cadets are played by Sandro Rosta, Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané, and Zoë Steiner. Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau serve as co-showrunners and executive producers, alongside Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber.

Starfleet Academy arrives at a transitional time for Paramount+’s Star Trek lineup. Previous shows like Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Prodigy have concluded. Meanwhile, Strange New Worlds, which just returned for season three, has been renewed for a fifth and final season.

With the franchise in transition, Paramount+ is counting on Starfleet Academy to attract a new generation of viewers and keep the Star Trek universe moving forward.
