Super Eagles skipper William Troost-Ekong has shared his thoughts on Nigeria’s hard-fought road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs, describing the journey as one of the toughest tests the team has faced in recent years.
Naija News reports that the Super Eagles confirmed their spot in the playoffs after a commanding 4-0 win over the Cheetahs of the Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday night.
The victory wrapped up a strong finish to the qualifying round, with three wins and a draw in their last four matches.
Speaking after the game, Troost-Ekong who was sidelined during the match, praised his teammates for showing character and determination despite a difficult start to the campaign.
“I think it’s time that we continue to support this team. It’s easy to celebrate good moments, but it’s been a really tough ride these last months. That’s down to us, but we’ve come out now and achieved something that many said was impossible,” Troost-Ekong told reporters in Uyo.
The defender, who led by example throughout the qualifiers, urged fans to keep faith with the squad as they prepare for the decisive playoff phase.
Nigeria will now face tough competition from other African nations, such as Gabon, Cameroon, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with only a few tickets available for the World Cup.
If the Super Eagles qualify from the CAF Play-offs which will take place in Morocco in November, they will battle with five countries from other continents (except Europe), for the last two 2026 FIFA World Cup slots.
