Disney has revealed the total cost of producing Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and the number is staggering.

According to Forbes, the final figure for the 2019 epic space opera was $593.7 million, making it the third most expensive film ever made.

The Rise of Skywalker, directed and co-written by J.J. Abrams, is the final chapter of the nine-part Skywalker saga and the third installment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. It follows Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron as they lead the Resistance against Supreme Leader Kylo Ren and the First Order, now backed by a resurrected Emperor Palpatine.

The movie stars Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and several other well-known actors.

The film premiered in Hollywood on December 16, 2019, and opened in U.S. theaters on December 20.

While it earned over $1.077 billion worldwide, making it the seventh-highest-grossing movie of that year, it was still the lowest-grossing entry in the sequel trilogy. Critics gave the film mixed reviews, though it did receive multiple award nominations, including three at the Academy Awards and three at the British Academy Film Awards. It also won five Saturn Awards, including Best Science Fiction Film.

Earlier reports estimated the film’s production budget at $416 million, but the newly revealed total shows that additional costs, likely including marketing, reshoots, and post-production, pushed the number much higher.

This eye-watering total confirms the massive financial scale of the Star Wars franchise, highlighting the risks and rewards of producing blockbuster sagas of this size.

While the cost is astronomical, the Star Wars films have consistently proven to be cultural and financial powerhouses. It’s fascinating to see just how much goes into creating these cinematic universes. What do you think about the staggering $593.7 million price tag? Share your thoughts in the comments.
